Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension i.e. nOH is known to be caused by Multiple System Atrophy – MSA a rare disease that occurs when the autonomic nervous system is damaged. As a matter of fact, 80% of the MSA patients suffer from neurogenic orthostatic hypotension.
When a person suffers from MSA, the signal usually sent from the brain to tell the nerves to release norepinephrine is either weak or not working at all. Due to the less than required release of norepinephrine, the blood vessels (especially in your legs) do not squeeze and your blood pressure drops too low. This is the reason you feel dizziness and lightheadedness (the main symptoms of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension) while standing up.
Also because of the messed up brain signals, MSA patients are more than likely to suffer from high blood pressure when they lie down. This is also known as Supine Hypertension
